Lightning-fast beats, traditional Tanzanian music, South African afro house, and satirical lyrics about everything from corrupt police to dating while broke — this is the essence of singeli, the frantic and playful genre that emerged in the working-class neighborhoods of Tandale and Manzese around Dar es Salaam in the mid-2000s. Sisso & Maiko are known as pioneers of the genre, where speed is key and faster is always better.
